Starring Oscar nominee Steve Coogan, this poignant drama from director Peter Cattaneo follows an Englishman’s personal and political awakening after adopting a penguin during a cataclysmic period in Argentine history. “I used to be young and idealistic,” says Tom, a new teacher at a boarding school in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1976, “but I soon discovered that reality was different.” Hedonistic and emotionless, Tom is unmoved by any tale of woe or fact. He makes excuses for his shortcomings and inaction. However, when industrial oil-coated penguins wash up on the beach and fascists seize power in a coup, Tom is in for a profound awakening despite himself. Steve Coogan (Tom) and Jonathan Pryce star in this true story of wit, warmth and intuitive contradictions. It’s a story of discovery, humor, drama and cute penguin antics. There is real depth to the dialogue, characters, plot, and acting. Penguin Lessons was filmed in Spain with an Argentinian cast. Many of the actors experienced the recent dictatorship in Argentina, and they bring authenticity to the story. At the film’s world premiere screening at the Toronto International Film Festival, I was deeply moved by the knowledge that a single person or penguin can make a huge difference in the world in the face of such evil and tragedy. Rise up like lions after them. sleep In invincible numbers Shake your chains to the ground like the dew That fell on you in your sleep You are many, they are few. – Shelley.
