An Iranian-American trans man travels back to the LGBTQ+ archive to understand his sexuality. In an erotic journey of self-discovery, he encounters his past and present. It is a documentary about gay female-to-male and female-to-male transsexuals. It focuses mostly on life after transition, with little focus on the transition process itself. It is also aimed at those whose physical orientation is male. There are two main categories of subjects. One is Lou Sullivan, a F-to-M trans activist who was also a pioneer of gay identity. He is represented by several excerpts from an interview he gave on television and the writings of one of his correspondents. The other is a series of interviews with various trans people of different appearance and anatomy – one male subject insisted on keeping his vagina. They often have difficulty finding partners for intimacy, although Trans Night in gay bathhouses helps them a lot because they don’t have to explain themselves. It is wrapped in narrative drama. A male trans Iranian-American (who left Iran shortly after the revolution) goes to a queer archive in Chicago to do research and befriends a younger, boyish trans worker. The Iranian angle is reinforced by a discussion of the Iranian “omelette”; a dish. This hybrid approach increased interest and made it feel more than the dryness of a simple documentary. I saw it as part of a film festival that the actors and director attended. The director mentioned that an Iranian actor helped make a short “proof of concept” to solicit funding, and went on to add Iranian details to the script. Another actor was a self-described activist, and his part was written with him in mind.
