CBD, or ‘cannabidiol’, is taken from the hemp plant to make CBD products. With many people using CBD to alleviate anxiety today, we explore the benefits of CBD oil and why people are using it to help treat their anxiety.

Cannabidiol is a cannabinoid from the cannabis plant – but don’t panic, CBD products are mostly made using hemp plants, which are cannabis plants with very low levels of another cannabinoid – THC or ‘tetrahydrocannabinol’. THC is the chemical in cannabis that produces a ‘high’ and is illegal in the UK. CBD has no such intoxicating effect and has been deemed safe for use.

Using CBD to alleviate anxiety has become fairly common now that CBD oil is available in many health food shops. The reason why CBD is now being used to alleviate anxiety is because CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system – a system present in most animals that uses cannabinoid-like molecules to help our bodily systems communicate and work together.

More studies need to be done to investigate the mechanisms that CBD uses for these beneficial effects, but currently it is thought that by interacting with receptors in the brain CBD may alter serotonin signals. The 5-HT1A receptor is a serotonin receptor that CBD interacts with, as well as others that control fear and anxiety-induced behaviours.

Evidence for using CBD to alleviate anxiety shows that CBD could be an effective treatment for Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Panic Disorder (PD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD).
